Man killed while lying in roadway

FREDERICK, Md. - A man lying on Penn Shop Road died after he was struck by two cars early Tuesday, Maryland State Police in Frederick said Wednesday.

Leroy J. Hilton, 44, no fixed address, was lying on Penn Shop Road at the intersection with Md. 80 at around 3:30 a.m. when he was hit by a 1983 Buick Regal driven by Michael R. Bankerd, 49, of Monrovia, Md., police said.

Bankerd left the scene but returned an hour later, police said.

Hilton was then struck by a 1986 Dodge Aries driven by Alex E. Storms, 19, of Ijamsville, Md., police said.

Bankerd was charged with driving under the influence. He was being held on $7,500 bond.

Maryland State Police and the Frederick County State's Attorney's Office were continuing their investigation Wednesday.
