June 13, 1999

FREDERICK, Md. - A Mount Airy, Md., teenager was killed Sunday in a collision on Md. 75 near Darby Road, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said a Saturn driven by Jennifer Leigh Hakes, 15, and a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Homer Lee Gray, 42, of Joppatown, Md., collided head-on at 12:42 a.m., Sunday.

Hakes, who attended Linganore High School, was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

Gray was flown to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and was listed in fair condition, a hospital supervisor said.

She was traveling north on Md. 75 when she crossed the center line and collided with the pickup truck, which was southbound, deputies said.

Hakes was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Deputies said she took her parents' car without their permission and her destination was unknown.

An investigation is continuing.
