Mayor re-elected in Harpers Ferry

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Mayor Walton "Kip" Stowell won a third term in office Tuesday when hedefeated dentist Bob Johnson by 28 votes, according to results in the town election.

Stowell picked up 70 votes compared to Johnson's 42 votes, according to results.

Incumbents Linda Rago, Dan Riss and Peter Bradford were re-elected, but incumbent Carole Carter lost her seat.

The other two council seats went to John Hughes and Frieda Kidwell.

Nancy Spencer was unopposed for town recorder.

Johnson said he ran for mayor because he believed not enough was being done to raise police salaries and get more grant money for town.

Stowell said he wants to oversee an enlargement of the post office and enter into an agreement with the National Park Service to acquire the CSX train station on Potomac Street.
