Fire prevention, child safety program set for Tuesday

Shoney's and Volunteer Fire Company of Halfway will sponsor a fire prevention and child safety awareness program Tuesday, June 8, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Shoney's restaurant, 17301 Valley Mall in Hagerstown.

The event will feature child safety car seat checks, children's bicycle helmet safety checks, blood pressure checks and information on fire prevention. A fire truck and ambulance will be on display for tours, and WYII-FM 95.9 radio personalities will do a live radio remote.

Members of the fire company will be "Shoney's Celebrity Servers." All tips received by the celebrity servers will be donated to the fire company.



Workshops offered for parents and child-care providers

Workshops sponsored by Resources for Children and Families, formerly Western Maryland Child Care Resource Center, include:

* Wednesday, June 9 - "Management Techniques for Family Child Care: Part II, Starting Out Right," 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

* Monday, June 14 - "CPR Renewal," 6 to 9 p.m.

* Thursday, June 17 - "Building Self-Esteem in the Young Child," 7 to 9 p.m.

* Tuesday, June 22 - "Operating a Child-Care Center," 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Fees for each workshop range from $10 to $35. The workshops are open to parents, child-care providers and other interested persons. Call Michele Nixon or Jackie Williams at 301-733-0000 for location and information.


Tobacco cessation class starts Thursday

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Waynesboro Hospital will offer a six-part tobacco cessation course starting Thursday, June 10, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the hospital.

Locations are as follows: June 10, 15 and 24 in the family birthing services classroom; June 14, 16 and 21 in the conference room.

Sarabeth Johnson, community health educator, will teach participants how to quit using tobacco through behavior modification.

The cost is $25 for the series, but the course is free to employees of any Summit Health entity.

Free ostomy clinic set for Saturday

Home Care Pharmacy at Robinwood Medical Center, 11110 Medical Campus Road in Hagerstown, will sponsor a free ostomy clinic Saturday, June 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

As a person with an ostomy resumes regular activities following surgery, it may be difficult to have questions answered, learn of new management techniques and products or have one's stoma and skin evaluated by an expert.

Ann Sowers, an ostomy nurse specialist, will provide confidential evaluations. Also, there will be an opportunity to try some of the newest products available. The clinic is by appointment only. For an appointment, call Sowers at 301-790-8326.
