Woman injured in fall

May 31, 1999

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - A 32-year-old Martinsburg woman was flown to a Virginia hospital Monday afternoon after she slipped and fell 40 feet from a cliff in Hedgesville, according to a member of the Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Company.

The woman was walking along a narrow path above the Blue Hole swimming area with her boyfriend around 5:30 p.m. Monday when she lost her footing and fell into the water, Hedgesville paramedic Jim McQuaid said.

The woman's name was withheld by rescue workers.

The woman lost conciousness for a brief period after the fall, but her boyfriend ran down to the water and kept her head above water until help arrived, McQuaid said.

Rescuers placed her on a back board and used a nearby fishing boat to float her 300 yards to a waiting ambulance, McQuaid said.

The woman complained off severe back pain, but had regained feeling in her legs and arms when she was taken by helicopter to Inova Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Va.

The hospital would not release the woman's condition.
