May 26, 1999

CARLISLE, Pa. - Two Waynesboro residents were killed Tuesday night in a fiery crash on Interstate 81 north of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Steve Karmendy and Crystal Green, both 31 and of College Road, were in a car that apparently was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer.

The accident occurred in a construction zone about 10:45 p.m., but it is unclear what led to it, a trooper with the Carlisle barracks said Wednesday night.

Four vehicles were involved in the crash, including two tractor-trailers, the car in which Karmendy and Green died and another vehicle, the trooper said.

Karmendy was driving the car and Green was his passenger, police said.

After the car was struck from behind, it caught fire with the two trapped inside.

Karmendy and Green were severely burned and identification was done through dental records and other means, according to a release from the Cumberland County Coroner's Office.

Autopsies will be performed today to determine the specific causes of death for the two, the release states.

State Police are asking that anyone who witnessed the crash call them at 1-717-249-2121.
