Councilman drops trash pickup program

May 18, 1999

Hagerstown City Councilman J. Wallace McClure is again stopping Operation Pride and Groom.

McClure said Tuesday he and one other person often were alone in picking up trash and pulling weeds over the last six Saturdays.

The lack of helpers discouraged McClure, and then on Saturday he had an unusually difficult helper. McClure said that's when he decided to stop Operation Pride and Groom for the season.

"It did highlight people's awareness," McClure said. "And the city looks better than it has."

McClure said he wanted to bring back the program in the fall. But he wanted to change it from a weekly project to a one-time event focusing on different neighborhoods.

"Volunteers like to come out one time and get it done," McClure said.

McClure oversaw three weeks of Operation Pride and Groom last fall, and restarted it this spring.
