Kindergarten registration set

May 17, 1999

Wednesday, May 19, has been set aside for kindergarten registration for students who will attend Washington County Public Schools. Registration for students will be held in each school in the county during regular hours.

Maryland state law requires any child who will be 5 years old on or before Dec. 31 to enroll in the kindergarten program with certain exceptions.

Children, who will be 4 years old by Dec. 31, may be eligible to participate in the prekindergarten programs at some elementary schools.

To register children for kindergarten and prekindergarten, parents and guardians must provide each child's birth certificate, proof of immunization, Social Security number, and proof of Washington County residency. Proof of family income also is required for prekindergarten.

Because of limited funding and classroom space, all applicants cannot be accepted for the prekindergarten programs.

Maryland regulations require each student who is entering school for the first time during the 1999-2000 school year to have a physical examination prior to the first day of school.

For more information, call the school principal or the office of Martha Roulette, director of student services, at 301-766-2961.

Information on waivers for kindergarten attendance is available from Ralph Kline, supervisor of early childhood/federal programs, at 301-766-2936.
