CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The dramatic rescue of a 17-month-old boy from a well in Kansas last week had special meaning for a family in Chambersburg.

Tim Deneen, the firefighter who pulled Jessy Kraus to safety after rescuers dug down 25 feet to reach the toddler, is the son-in-law of the Rev. Harold Posey, retired pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Chambersburg.

Posey said Saturday night that he has been in constant contact with his daughter, Patricia, to learn about the rescue, which attracted national attention.

Jessy was released from a hospital Friday after being trapped 16 feet below the ground in the narrow well near his house in Mulvane, about 20 miles south of Wichita.

Posey said his son-in-law and other firefighters dug below the point where the boy was. He said the firefighters then dug under Jessy and up until they reached him.

Deneen and his wife have lived in Wichita since 1989.

"He's a marvelous young man. He has handled himself so well in the news," Posey said Saturday night.
