Donation to choral group included in city budget

May 12, 1999

At the request of Hagerstown City Councilman J. Wallace McClure, a $1,000 donation to the Hagerstown Choral Arts will be included in the city's budget for the 2000 fiscal year, which begins July 1.

"They are truly a cultural asset to the community and they should be recognized," McClure said.

On Tuesday, council members informally agreed to the donation, which is among a list of contributions from the city to arts and entertainment groups included in the proposed budget.

Councilwoman Susan Saum-Wicklein said although she was not opposed to the donation, she questioned how they will receive it.

The group did not come to the city asking for the money this year.

Saum-Wicklein said the city needs a better decision-making process for providing donations.

City Administrator Bruce Zimmerman said he would schedule a discussion and a review of the process for a future council meeting.
