Crumbs from the Cracker Barrell

May 11, 1999

In 1927 Hancock native John Lloyd "Ike" Powers signed a contract with the Philadelphia Athletics for $350 a month. Philadelphia manager Connie Mack had been impressed with Powers' work ethic two years earlier and finally offered the Washington Countian a contract in '27. That fall Powers sent his skipper a gift that came from the hills around Hancock. In a note to Powers, Mack stated, "Received a very nice surprise the other day when a fine basket of apples was delivered to me. Want to assure you that same is very much appreciated, and the apples are fine."
