Sunday's roundup - Shepherd loses WVC title in ninth inning

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. - Joe Payne's sacrifice fly scored Shannon Cabell in the top of the ninth inning to give West Virginia State an 8-7 win over Shepherd Sunday to win the West Virginia Conference title at Bowen Field.

The Yellow Jackets took a 7-6 lead in the fifth on a solo homer by former Boonsboro star Will Sowers. Shepherd tied the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Brian Tozer, leading to Payne's game-winning flyout. Shepherd ends the season with a 24-19 record.

Adam Straskulic led the Rams by going 3-for-5, including a double and two home runs. He gave the Rams up 1-0 in the first with a solo home run to right field.

After State scored two in second, the Rams answered back with four runs -- highlighted by a three-run homer by Straskulic.


Justin Graham's two-run blast highlighted a four-run third to give the Yellow Jackets a 6-5 lead.

Straskulic doubled home Chris Black to knot the game at 6-6.


Cougars advance to Region XX finals

CATONSVILLE, Md. - Laura Rosas hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to break a tie and help Frederick Community College to a 6-3 win over Cecil in the Region XX Tournament.

The win sends Frederick into the title game today at 4 against Charles at Anne Arundel Community College. If needed, a game will be played at 6 to determine the winner in the double-elimination tourney.


Big League

Clear Spring 9, Williamsport 4: Barry Smoot and David Hose had two hits each for the winners. Chris Chaney and Sean Peterson had two hits each for Williamsport.

Clear Spring 5, Williamsport 4: Matt Michael and Barry Smoot had two hits each. One of Smoot's was a homer. For Williamsport, Sean Peterson had three hits, and Melvin High had two.

South County 9, Maugansville 5: Mike Hawes and Hoppy Livinggood each homered to lead South County in the first game of a doubleheader. Mike Anderson doubled for Maugansville.

South County 12, Maugansville 2: Art Rhoderick and Curtis Barnard homered to lead South County to a sweep. Ernie Giradia had two hits for Maugansville.

Washington County Babe Ruth

GVAA 13, Haller Construction 3: David Gouff had two hits including a triple, and Brent Myers added two hits for Haller Construction.

Valley Little League

Pangborn 9, FOP 7: Matt Feiser had three hits to lead Pangborn. Alex Bust had four hits and Bruce Persons and Corey Ausherman had two hits each for FOP.

South Mountain Little League

Thompson's Gas & Electric 19, Designs Unlimited 14: Alex Martin drove in three runs with three hits while Travis Hahn had three hits and two RBIs to lead Thompson's. Nick Smith added two hits. Jared Vaugh had three hits for Designs Unlimited while David Lewis, Joel Pryor and Mike Soop had two hits each.
