Fire destroys laundry building

May 08, 1999

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Fire destroyed the Superior Laundry Service building on U.S. 11 south of Martinsburg on Saturday night.

A passerby saw the fire about 7:15 p.m. When firefighters arrived shortly after, flames were shooting from the roof and rear windows of the one-story metal building, said Mike Hough, assistant chief of Baker Heights Volunteer Fire Co.

The cause of the fire is being investigated. It may be electrical, Hough said.

About two dozen firefighters from Baker Heights and South Berkeley fire companies brought the fire under control within 45 minutes, but by then the structure was a total loss, he said.

Damage to the building, formerly known as the Community Oil building, was estimated at $100,000, he said.
