Autopsy to be performed on infant

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - An autopsy will be performed as part of an investigation into the death of an infant reported Friday in southern Berkeley County, said Lt. Kenny Lemaster of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department.

The death appeared to be from natural causes, but an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death, Lemaster said.

The baby was believed to be about a month old, Lemaster said.

He would not identify where the baby died, saying he wanted to protect the identity of the family.

Man caught after escape from bailiff

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A man escaped from a bailiff in Berkeley County Circuit Court on Friday but was later apprehended by police on Queen Street, according to police.

The man was taken before a judge after he escaped, said Lt. Kenny Lemaster of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department.

Fire causes $1,000 in damages

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A fire that started in an electrical panel box in a house on West Race Street on Friday caused about $1,000 in damages, a fire official said.

The fire was contained to the basement of the house at 513 W. Race St., said Capt. Brad Waldeck of the Martinsburg Fire Department.

Firefighter Fred Pearrell was treated and released from City Hospital after falling down some steps and injuring his right knee while fighting the fire, said Waldeck.
