Cumberland hosts Arbor Day celebration

Downtown Cumberland played host to the Western Maryland Arbor Day celebration and PLANT Awards ceremony Friday as 13 different civic groups and schools, including Clear Spring Middle School, received awards for their work in urban forestry.

The PLANT Awards, sponsored by Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the Forest Service and Maryland Community Forest Council, were presented to a number of organizations from throughout the state's four most-western counties.

Among those lauded for the planting of trees and other plant life in their communities were Broadfording Elementary School, Clear Spring Middle School, Deer Crossing Elementary School, Garrett Memorial Hospital, the City of Oakland, Fort Detrick School, the City of Cumberland, the City of Frederick, the City of Hagerstown, Allegany College, Bel Air Elementary School, Route 40 Elementary School and the City of Westernport.
