Man pleads guilty to robbery

April 29, 1999

The man charged Jan. 5 with taking a woman's wallet at the Clear Spring Amoco Station on Wednesday pleaded guilty to robbery in Washington County Circuit Court.

Steven L. Mellott, 34, of 203A S. Artizan St., Williamsport, also had been charged with felony theft and second-degree assault. Those charges were dropped in exchange for the plea.

Circuit Judge Kennedy Boone jailed Mellott pending completion of a pre-sentence investigation. He authorized Mellott for admission to the Jail Substance Abuse program for his admitted drug problem.

"I need help," Mellott said at his videotaped bond review Jan. 7 from the Washington County Detention Center. "I have a drug problem."

The charges stem from an incident in which Mellott took a wallet from the open purse of a woman who was trying to help him, according to Maryland State Police.

Mellott's prior record includes a 10-year sentence for assault with intent to maim in 1989.

He could face up to 10 years for robbery.
