April 24, 1999

Fountaindale Elementary School was the only Washington County school to place in the annual Maryland State Odyssey of the Mind tournament in Catonsville, Md., on Saturday.

A team of seven students placed fourth in CustOMer Service, Division I, said OM Western Maryland Regional Director Georgiana Keller.

Team members are Elizabeth Cuthbert, Brittney Forero, Cara Graver, Wendy Heyser, Jamy Johnson, Ashley Murray and Beth Plume. Team coaches are Mike Heyser and Bob Plume.

For the CustOMer Service problem, the team had to give a performance involving a sales transaction between two or more co-workers and a customer, according to the program guide.

The team was one out of approximately 25 competing in that category at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Keller said.

Several Frederick County teams placed, including the one from Urbana High School that placed first in Ratiometric Structure, Division III, Keller said.

The Urbana team will represent the Western Maryland Region in the World Finals at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville from May 26 to 30, Keller said.

Other Frederick County teams that placed were:

* Ballenger Creek Middle School placed third in CustOMer Service, Division II.

* Gov. Thomas Johnson Middle School placed fifth in O, My Faire Shakespeare, Division II.

* St. John's Literary Institute at Prospect Hall placed fifth in Ratiometric Structure, Division III.

Keller said North Frederick Elementary School's team was given the OMer Award for the spirit of Odyssey of the Mind for their competition in Environmental Challenge, Division I.
