2 year old shot in Martinsburg

April 24, 1999

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - A 2-year-old boy accidentally shot his left index finger Friday night with a .38-caliber pistol he found on his parents' bed, according to West Virginia State Police.

The boy's parents brought him to City Hospital in Martinsburg at about 10:10 p.m. Friday, state police said.

The toddler was later taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia where he is expected to undergo minor surgery on Monday, said Sr. Trooper Thomas Kearns. The boy was in good condition, Kearns said.

Police said the toddler's injuries were limited to the one finger.

Police did not release the names of the boy or his parents.

No criminal charges had been filed as of Saturday night. Kearns said the incident is being investigated as an accidental shooting.

Berkeley County Prosecuting Attorney Pamela Games-Neely said the investigation of the incident was not complete and it was too early to say what, if anything, might happen.
