Hearing postponed on annexation bid off Mt. Aetna Road

April 22, 1999

A public hearing on an annexation request for 36.7 acres off Mount Aetna Road on the east side of Hagerstown that was scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed at the request of the prospective developer, City Economic Development Coordinator Debbie Everhart said.

The annexation hearing probably will be rescheduled for June, Everhart said.

The developers wanted more time to prepare a presentation for the hearing, she said.

The annexation request includes a request to change the zoning from agricultural to residential, and plans for a residential development of almost 230 housing units in quads, triples and duplexes, according to development plans filed with the city.

The land is surrounded by Mount Aetna Road, Maplewood Drive, Fairmeadows Boulevard and houses along Londontowne Circle.

The site is the same property where a 1770s-era log house built by one of Washington County's first commissioners stood until it was demolished in early March.

The demolition was criticized by some because the Washington County permits department approved the demolition without determining whether the property was historical.
