Chase traverses two states

April 22, 1999

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A high-speed police chase that began in Frederick County, Va. ended in the parking lot of the Martinsburg Mall early Thursday, police said.

A Berkeley County Sheriff's Department deputy joined the pursuit of a suspected drunken driver on northbound Interstate 81 about 12:21 a.m. Thursday, said Sheriff's Department Capt. C.E. Keller.

Police used sharpened "stop sticks" to shred one of the tires on the 1983 Ford Thunderbird, but the driver exited the freeway at Apple Harvest Drive and headed toward the mall.

The driver ran into the back of a West Virginia State Police cruiser when police tried to box him in, finally stopping in the mall parking lot near The Sports Garden, Keller said.

Thomas Roy Abrell, 22, of Stephen City, Va., was charged with fleeing from police, failure to stop, reckless driving and driving with a revoked license.

A 17-year-old male passenger in the car was charged with being under the influence of alcohol, Keller said.

Abrell was held Thursday on $3,948 bond in the Eastern Regional Jail near Martinsburg.
