Roundup-Trojans inflict Paine on Cumberland Valley

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - Sarah Paine tossed a one-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts as No. 1 Chambersburg defeated Cumberland Valley 2-0 Wednesday in a Mid Penn Commomnwealth game.

Storme Yeager drove in both runs for the Trojans (5-0, 3-0).


TJ Red 11, Hagerstown United 6

Stephanie Shrader netted a hat trick in the loss for Hagerstown United (3-5). Lindsay Weaver, Bonnie Hamberger and April Brutcher each scored a goal.


Hoffman wins MAL MVP

Hancock senior Derek Hoffman was named Most Valuable Player of the Mid Appalachian League in voting by the conference's coaches.

Hoffman averaged 21.9 points and 13.2 rebounds to lead the Panthers to a 9-0 league record and their second league title.


Paw Paw junior Josh Delawder, West Virginia's scoring champion the last two years, was named the league's Most Outstanding Player.

Hancock senior John Allen joined Hoffman and Delawder on the first team, as did Larry O'Baker (Jr., Mt. Savage), Mike Groves (Sr., Flintstone) and Jeff Walls (So., Hyndman).

Jacob Rhodes and Mike Hixon represented the Panthers on the second team. They were joined by Jason DeShong (Sr., Oldtown), Adam Lease (Sr., Paw Paw), Tyler Logsdon (Jr., Hyndman) and Adam Stafford (Sr., Mt. Savage).

Justin Kint received honorable mention for the Panthers.

Spreng wins golf tournament

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Joshua Spreng, of Hagerstown, won the Plantations Junior Golf Tour Tournament's 16-19 age division at Cress Creek Golf Course.

Spreng fired consecutive rounds of 73 in the tournament, held April 17-18.

Snickers 99 State Cup this weekend

The Snickers '99 Maryland State Cup U-18 boys soccer tournament will be held at the Hagerstown/Cearfoss soccer complex Saturday and Sunday.

Fourteen youth soccer teams from throughout the state are competing in the annual event, including the Hagerstown Heat and last year's national semifinalist team, the SCB Stars of Baltimore.

The regional championship game will be held next month in Rhode Island. The national championship game is scheduled to in Orlando, Fla., later this summer.

Coca-Cola 7, Elks 1: Jayce McElroy had two hits and an RBI to lead Coca-Cola. Chris Grove had two hits for Elks.

National Little League

Longmeadow Exxon 2, Elks 1: Wayne Young and Brock Jamison each had two hits, while winning pitcher Patrick Hutzler struck out 10 for Longmeadow Exxon.

Valley Little League

Pangborn 13, SMRG 2: Josh Daniels hurled a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts for Pangborn. Tyler Wolford had three hits, while Keith Fowler added two for the winners.

Smithsburg Little Sluggers

Bair Pools 9, Lions 6: Logan Miss, Ryan Channey and Michael Rinebolt combined for 14 strikeouts for Bair Pools. Miss had three hits, while Rinebolt and Bruce Storms added two. Matt Thompson, Jimmy Burgers and Josh Hummelsine each had two hits for Lions.

Federal Little League

Kiwanis 13, Lions 12: P.J. Donoghue and Matt Huber had two hits, while Harrison Hammond homered for Kiwanis. Cody Henson had three hits for Lions.

Senior Interleague

Clear Spring FOP 8, NARG Valley 7: Brian Grove hit two home runs, including the game winner, for FOP. Ryan Grove, Josh Fiedler and Danny Helser each added two hits, while Helser picked up the win. Mike Smith and Aaron Showe each had two hits for Valley.

Conococheague Little League

Lions 14, Post 202 2: David Bussard had three hits, while Tyler Cline and Philip Jordan each had two for Lions. Josh Welsh drove in two runs for Post 202.

South Mountain Little League

Nationwide 11, Lions 7: Corey Robinson struck out six to earn the win, while Matthew Byers had two hits for Nationwide. Justin Short, Jared Ferguson, Mark Ferro and Brian Toms each had two hits for Lions.

Maugansville Little League

Brewer's Saab 10, Executone 5: Andrew Merrbaugh and Brian Barnhart each had three hits, while Matt McCauley added two for Brewer's Saab. Corey Monroe had two hits for Executone.

Hancock Little League

Pirates 6, Astros 2: Brian Powers struck out 10, while Kenny Clark had two hits for the Pirates. Amy Barton had two hits for the Astros.

Wash. Co. Senior League

Wilson Ruritan 9, Jeter Paving 5: Todd McCall had a homer and four RBIs to lead Wilson Ruritan. Winning pitcher Dustin Taylor added two doubles. Gary Bloyer and Dustin Thomas had two hits for Jeter Paving.
