SMITHSBURG - Don't think of Rachel Bachtell as just a volleyball and basketball player.

During her sophomore season in 1997, Bachtell was named the Washington County Softball Player of the Year. She had to sit out her junior softball season last spring because she suffered a torn ligament in her knee during basketball season.

And now in her senior season, she's returning to her 1997 form.

Bachtell, the leadoff hitter and shortstop, reached base four times with two hits and two walks Monday. She had two RBIs, scored two runs and stole two bases to lead the Smithsburg Leopards to an 11-6 victory over the North Hagerstown Hubs in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League game.

Smithsburg erased a 1-0 deficit with eight runs in the bottom of the first. Ten of 13 batters reached base for Smithsburg in the first on seven walks and three singles. Bachtell drew two of those walks and scored two of those runs.

"We had patience at the plate during the first inning," Bachtell said. "That helped us to draw some walks."

Renee Palmer had a two-run single, Morgan Waldron had an RBI single, and Emily Crunkleton had a two-run single in the first inning for the Leopards.

"I think that our offense has been coming along since the beginning of the season," Bachtell added. "Renee Palmer has really crushed the ball. Our pitcher, Lauren Reed, did a great job."

Reed gave up only two earned runs in seven innings to get the win.

"I just tried to hit the corners," Reed said. "I also tried to throw the ball hard by giving it all that I've got."

"Lauren Reed is able to get a lot of ground-ball outs," Smithsburg coach Doug Bachtell said. "We have been in every ball game and we are getting better every ball game."
