Harold O. McCleaf

Harold Ohler McCleaf, 74, of 306 N. Colonial Drive, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 21, 1924, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Charles H. and Mary A. Carbaugh McCleaf.

He was employed by D.C. Transit, retiring in 1972 after 24 years.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps,where he received a purple heart during the battle of Iwo Jima.

He was of the Lutheran faith.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy T. McCleaf; two daughters, Carole Joy Brown of Bryans Road, Md., and Lennis Jean Hermansen of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Michael Jay McCleaf of Rockville, Md.; a sister, June Dann of Belifont, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris McCleaf and Louise Nuckels; and three brothers, Robert McCleaf, Grayson McCleaf and Ralph McCleaf.

Graveside services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Parklawn Cemetery, Rockville. The Rev. L. James Downs will officiate.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

Arrangements are by Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Kathryn V. Foster

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Kathryn V. Foster, 87, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Born July 11, 1911, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late Lewis E. and Daisy Virginia Cline Barley.

She retired as a clerk for the federal government in Washington, D.C.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

She is survived by a son, Gordon C. Whitacre Jr. of Manassas, Va.; a sister, Josephine Baum of Martinsburg; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Loretta Favil.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. James D. Riley Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Walter W. Keefer

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Walter W. Keefer, 86, of 7815 Mount Olivet Road, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Menno-Haven, Chambersburg.

Born Nov. 19, 1912, in Horse Valley, Pa., he was the son of the late Robert D. and Iva Mae Fleagle Keefer.

He was a plumber for N.E. Diffenderfer Plumbing and Heating Inc., Chambersburg, retiring in 1974. After retiring, he worked part time as a plumber for friends and neighbors. He previously had been employed for 27 years at the former Chambersburg Implement Co. as a plumber.

He was a member of Mount Olivet United Brethren Church, Chambersburg.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Upperman Keefer, whom he married June 17, 1944; two daughters, Sara Mae Keefer at home and Linda R. Rife of Chambersburg; two sons, Rodney E. Keefer of Falls Church, Va., and Kenneth W. Keefer of Chambersburg; a sister, Bertha Keefer of Shippensburg, Pa.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister and five brothers.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Mount Olivet United Brethren Church, 8205 Fort McCord Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Stan McCammon will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg; and Monday at noon at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to Mount Olivet United Brethren Church, 8205 Fort McCord Road, Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Mildred E. Nye

Mildred E. Nye, 93, of 11 S. Walnut St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.

Born June 23, 1905, in Mercersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late George W. and Lula McCarl Houpt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar W. Nye, in 1984.

She was a member of Trinity Evangelical and Reformed Church of Mercersburg.

She attended Breakaway.

She is survived by a daughter, Charlotte Shirley of Hagerstown; two sons, Harvey G. Nye of Brownsburg, Va., and Walter Nye of Hagerstown; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; four nieces and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Thompson; and a grandson.

Services will be Friday at 4 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Jay M. Fretz will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport.

Visitation will be Friday from 3:30 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

M. Charlene Smith

ARTEMAS, Pa. - M. Charlene Smith, 56, of Silver Mills Road, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 25, 1942, in Neoshio, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Charles Russell Covert and the late Mildred Susan Ward Henderson.

She was employed as a licensed practical nurse at Valley View Nursing Home in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

She was a member of Fairview Christian Church, Inglesmith, Pa.
