The anniversary gathering was hosted by the couples' three sons and their families, Lew and Fran Martin of Hagerstown; Delmar and Karen Martin of Chambersburg, Pa.; and Conrad Martin of Mbeya, Tanzania, East Africa.
The highlight of the weekend was when their son Conrad walked in on the dinner, surprising the couple with an unexpected visit from Africa.
The entire family enjoyed a tour of the Lancaster countryside and attended "Noah" in Lancaster's Sight and Sound Theatre.
The Martins were married March 11, 1949, in Sarah's home in Maugansville. The Martins are retired and make their home in Greenview Acres.
On March 21, the couple's children and grandchildren again surprised them with a gathering of family and friends for a surprise open house held at Shalom Christian Academy. Approximately 100 attended the golden anniversary event.
Jack and Lois Tritsch of Hagerstown were honored Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at a surprise dinner party at Red Horse Inn in Frederick, Md., in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary.
The event was hosted by their six children and spouses, Karen Sandidge, Mike and Teresa Tritsch, Les and Linda Tritsch, Ken Tritsch, Pete and Cindy Moats and Tom and Carrie Tritsch. Other family members attended the celebration as well.
The Tritschs were married Feb. 4, 1949, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hagerstown by Robert W. Koons, associate pastor.
Mrs. Tritsch is the daughter of the late Grover and Mary Williams.
Mr. Tritsch is the son of the late Russell and Mary Tritsch.
They have 13 grandchildren.
Donald E. and Joann G. West of Hagerstown celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, March 20, 1999, at Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 in Hagerstown. A surprise anniversary party was hosted by sons and relatives John West, Ron West, Betty Weinbrenner and Beth West. More than 50 friends and relatives attended the party.
The Wests were married March 19, 1949, in Hagerstown.
Mrs. West is the former Joann Guiliani, daughter of the late Dante and Mazie Guiliani. During the early years of her marriage she worked for A&P Supermarket and First National Bank of Maryland. She is a homemaker.
Mr. West is the son of Evelyn West and the late Norman West. He spent the majority of his years employed by Norman S. Early and Sons and is the semi-retired vice president of Butler Construction Co.
A 50th wedding anniversary celebration for Daniel and Kathleen Ashton of Back Creek Valley was held Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at Holiday Inn in Martinsburg, W.Va. Approximately 100 family members and friends gathered for the occasion hosted by their children Larry, Allen, Kathie and Danny Ashton and their spouses.
Mr. and Mrs. Ashton were married Dec. 24, 1948, in Petersburg, W.Va., by the Rev. Daniel S. Frazier.
Mrs. Ashton is the daughter of the late Allen Thurman and Virginia Bell Sharff Tyson.
Mr. Ashton is the son of the late Janney Clifton and Ada Lee Pitzer Ashton.
They have nine grandchildren.
