Mail Call

April 08, 1999

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call weekdays at 301-791-6236.

Readers are welcome to leave their recorded message on any topic they choose, but some calls are screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I would like to know why the city of Hagerstown would want to demolish that beautiful, Victorian house on Summit Avenue and Baltimore Street? When you go to The Herald-Mail and look up at that row of houses, they are all beautiful. Besides, that is a busy intersection there. That church has a parking lot in the back that they don't even use. I just think that it is bad."

"Mail Call readers, who do you think should be Time magazine's Man of the 20th Century? What one person affected more people's lives for good or evil than anyone else? Examples, Roosevelt, Hitler, Stalin. Let's hear from you callers."

"This is for all you communist people in this country. I see where our elite leader has received another $300,000 from the communist Chinese Party. He's a real fellow isn't he, people?"

"This message is to the town officials of Sharpsburg. Stop talking for the people of the town. You are the only ones who don't want advancements in this town. Everyone here would love to have fast-food establishments here. You won't be here forever and it will be done. If you don't think this is correct, take a survey, if you dare."

"I wanted to let the public know that a good man has passed away. Mr. Pollen, we are surely going to miss your fresh tomatoes and peppers. I'm sure you all saw him around the Huyetts area. Good-bye, good friend."

"I see that it is politics as usual. Before the county elections, one county commissioner told me he was against subsidizing the water and sewer out of the general fund. Now I see after the meeting the other night, he wants to increase the money being given to the Washington County water and sewer. Instead of decreasing, he wants to give them more. He told me to my face that he wanted to eliminate it. He knows who he is if he reads this."

"I would like to express my gratitude for everyone who sent me cards and flowers and for the prayers for me and my family for my recent heart transplant. Your kindness will be remembered forever, Leonna M. Long and family."

"I have a question, why is councilwoman Susan Saum-Wicklein being able to get away with stuff year after year, after year, as far as taxes? Is it because she is a councilwoman?"

"I need help, I have a motorized scooter and a motorized wheelchair and I can't get either one to work. I have purchased batteries, I don't know what the problem is. Can you call me at 301-733-0453?"

"I think that the trash collection in Hagerstown should stay twice weekly."

"Why doesn't the library get new bookmobiles? They are terrible looking. Why don't they just get a horse and buggy?"

"We think Susan Saum-Wicklein should resign from the City Council. Why should she be on the board making rules for other people when she doesn't follow them herself? From things I have read in the paper, she has been in different trouble. I think she better mind her family business instead of making rules for other people. I think that this is terrible."

"I would like to make a comment to the person who said that they were tired of people putting down Clinton and the people like Pat Buchanan running his mouth and just giving comfort to the enemy. That person's brain must be like a BB in a box car. If they check their facts, they will find out that Clinton can't be trusted or believed in anything he says. Pat Buchanan has more credibility in his little finger than Clinton has in his whole body."

"To the Mail Caller, concerning the man in the Philippines nailing himself to the cross. During Easter this is done all over the world in many different cultures. It is their belief, by doing this, they will be closer to God and reaffirm their faith. Who are you to question their faith? They never said that they were saviors."

"I'm looking for someone to see if they have a 1965 yearbook for North Hagerstown High School for sale. That was the year I graduated and I lost mine a few years ago and I would like to have one. My number is 301-745-5617."

"I think that the Board of Education should give the lunch assistants a raise. They work really hard and if anyone deserves a raise it should be the lunch assistants."

"I feel that the councilwoman who did not pay taxes for all those years owes us an explanation. I supported this woman in the past but I will not in the future. I feel that she owes us in taxes, licenses and fees. Why was this able to go on for so long and not found out?"

"This goes to the person who said 'God doesn't make the decisions, the government does.' Well look at what the government has us in - a bad predicament. The government always messes up, so why not focus on God first?"
