Zentmyer memorial planned

April 07, 1999

A plan to construct a memorial for the late Hagerstown High School Principal John D. Zentmyer was supported by Hagerstown City Council members this week.

Peter G. Callas, a former student of Zentmyer's who went on to become an elementary school principal and a Maryland state delegate, met with council members Tuesday to ask if the city would oversee the money collected for a monument.

Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II and city Finance Director Al Martin are honorary members of the fund-raising committee, and the council agreed to support the effort.

Callas said a plaque set in a stone is expected to cost about $9,000.

Recommended locations include Public Square, City Park or at the intersection of Mealey Parkway and Potomac Street, which is where the old high school was before it was demolished in 1981, Callas said.

Callas said contributions can be sent to the John D. Zentmyer Memorial Fund, in care of Al Martin, Hagerstown City Finance Department, 1 E. Franklin St. Hagerstown, MD 21740.
