Man gets 1 year in sex case

April 02, 1999

An 18-year-old Hagerstown man who admitted having sex with an underage girl was sentenced Thursday to one year in jail by Washington County Circuit Judge John H. McDowell.

Jonathan Scott Kauffman, of 22 E. Lee St., pleaded guilty to one count each of third-degree sex offense and contributing to the condition of a child, according to court records.

McDowell, who originally handed Kauffman a five-year prison term, suspended all but one year. A one-year concurrent sentence was levied for the contributing charge.

The incident occurred in May or June 1998, according to court records.

Kauffman admitted to police that he had sexual intercourse with the girl, who was then 13, at a house in the 500 block of West Franklin Street.
