Marine Pfc. Seth E. Workman, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. and was meritoriously promoted to his present rank. He is the grandson of Dave and Mae Fritz of Frederick, Md. Workman is a 1998 graduate of Thomas Johnson High School.




Marine Cpl. Marisa L. Markoukian, daughter of Brenda S. Thomas of Fayetteville, Pa, recently received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal while serving with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 772, Marine Air Group 49, Naval Air Station, Willow Grove, Pa. She was recognized for her outstanding achievement while serving as supply manager and was singled out for the award because of her superb initiative and contribution in helping the command fulfill its mission. Markoukian also received a Certificate of Commendation. She is a 1991 graduate of Gettysburg Senior High School, Gettysburg, Pa.




Marine Pfc. Ragan L. Butler, daughter of Frank E. Bible and Linda B. Wren, both of Martinsburg, W.Va., recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. Butler is a 1993 graduate of Hedgesville High School, Hedgesville, W.Va.

Marine Lance Cpl. Phillip N. Long, son of Philip N. Long and Gwynne D. Pope, both of Thurmont, Md., recently received a Letter of Appreciation while assigned with Marine Wing Support Squadron 371, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Ariz. He was recognized for his superior performance of duty. Long is a 1994 graduate of Catoctin High School, Thurmont.




Army Pvt. Cheyenne G. Chartner, son of Linda R. Christopher of Chambersburg, Pa., and grandson of Doris L. Wilson of Artemas, Pa., has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Knox, Ky.




Army Pvt. Richard C. Fletcher, son of Raymond C. Fletcher of Gaithersburg, Md., and Christine A. Johann of Falling Waters, W.Va., has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Knox, Ky.

WILLIAMSPORT

Eric S. Banas, of Hagerstown, recently enlisted in the Air Force's Delayed Enlistment Program. Banas was scheduled to attend Air Force Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, on March 3, 1999. He is a 1996 graduate of Williamsport High School, Williamsport.




Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Christopher E. Gehr recently participated in the inactivation ceremony of the attack submarine USS Atlanta, home ported in Norfolk, Va.

Since its commissioning in 1982, the USS Atlanta participated in six deployments to the Mediterranean Sea and three to the western Atlantic Ocean.

It was the first submarine certified to carry the Harpoon and Tomahawk missiles as well as the MK-48 torpedo. It was also the first nuclear-powered sub directly assigned to support an amphibious ready group.

Gehr is a 1996 graduate of Williamsport High School, Williamsport.




Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Christina M. Fitzgerald, daughter of Michael J. Fitzgerald of Sharpsburg, recently was promoted to her present rank while serving aboard the amphibious command ship USS Mount Whitney, flagship for the U.S. Second Fleet, homeported in Norfolk, Va. Fitzgerald is a 1994 graduate of Southern Senior High School, Harwood, Md.

SMITHSBURG

Navy Seaman Richard D. Kuhn, son of Kathym Reifsnider of Smithsburg, recently graduated from the Basic Enlisted Submarine Course at the Naval Submarine School in Groton, Conn. Kuhn is a 1998 graduate of Smithsburg High School.

CLEAR SPRING

Navy Airman Brandee S. Randoll, daughter of Cheryl Cunningham of Clear Spring, recently participated in a community relations project during a visit to Hong Kong, while on a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian oceans aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, homeported in Bremerton, Wash. Sailors from Randoll's ship refurbished a local school for handicapped children and a local prayer center. Randoll is a 1992 graduate of North Hagerstown High School.




Army Pvt. Christopher R. Herman, son of Wesley R. Herman Jr., of Clear Spring, and Sherry L. White of Glen Burnie, Md., has graduated from the heavy-wheeled vehicle mechanic course at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Herman is a 1998 graduate of Clear Spring High School.
