Ask a Silly Question

March 30, 1999

Mars Inc. touts them as the "Official Candy of the New Millennium." They melt in your mouth, not in your hand.

M & M's.

How does the little "m" get on the shells?

After chocolate is poured into small molds to create the candy centers, the candy shell is sprayed on, and single-colored batches are combined, the candies are moved along a special conveyor belt.

The belt has grooves that hold individual candies in separate indentations. It moves past rubber etch rollers that gently touch each candy, printing the distinctive "m" on its shell.
