Plan to buy land near Big Pool OK'd

March 24, 1999

A state plan to purchase 24 acres near Fort Frederick State Park near Big Pool won approval Wednesday from the state Board of Public Works.

The board approved spending $88,800 in Program Open Space funds to buy the land, which borders the park on the northwest edge along Md. 56, known as Big Pool Road.

The purchase will not be final until the deed is transferred at the end of April, said Park Manager Ralph Young.

The Friends of Fort Frederick, a nonprofit organization, is contributing $15,000 toward the $103,800 purchase price.

"Our group is 100 percent dedicated to preserving the historical integrity of this unique state park," said Scott Allen, president of the organization.

The additional land will prevent development and protect natural resources in the area, according to Gov. Parris Glendening.

"Fort Frederick State Park, with its tremendous history, will now be protected from additional growth at its front door," he said in a press release. "I commend the dedication and generosity of The Friends of Fort Frederick."
