Council OKs rezoning requests

March 24, 1999

Two rezoning requests designating property along Wesel Boulevard in Hagerstown for commercial use were approved in separate 3-2 votes by Hagerstown City Council members Tuesday.

The vote on a request from the estate of the late C. Richard Startzman changes the zoning designation for 4.4 acres south of Wesel Boulevard and west of Sweeney Drive from industrial to commercial.

The other vote on a request from CSX Realty Development LLC rezones 7.6 acres, also south of Wesel Boulevard, from residential to commercial.

Together with previously approved rezonings and annexations of property adjacent to the lands owned by the Startzman estate and CSX, there will be a block of commercially zoned property along Wesel Boulevard east of the former Lowe's building.

Council members J. Wallace McClure and Susan Saum-Wicklein voted against the requests, but did not comment on the matter during the meeting.

During previous meetings, McClure and Saum-Wicklein had expressed concerns that the area, which is close to Valley Mall and a stretch of other retail stores, was becoming overcrowded with commercial properties.
