Mail Call for 3/12

March 12, 1999

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call weekdays at 301-791-6236.

Readers are welcome to leave their recorded message on any topic they choose, but some calls are screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I think it's time the city started enforcing the snow removal policy. There's a property on Pope Avenue which is never cleared of ice or snow, and it makes it dangerous for walking."

"This is to the Renner family who operated Georgie's Pizza place on Dual Highway. We were very sorry when we learned of your closing, as we enjoyed coming there so much. Along with others, we thank you for your kindness as you served others. May God bless all of you and best wishes in whatever you do."

"I'm concerned about Pet Hotline. If there's anybody out there who could raise some money for Pet Hotline, it sure would be appreciated by other people that are concerned about animals because Mrs. Harsh has, for years, taken in many strays. If some Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts or any organizations could raise money or have some benefits so she could raise some money, it sure would be appreciated by many, many citizens here in Washington County. Her number is 301-797-7174. That's Pet Hotline's number. I'm just a concerned person."

"Why do the police cater to the woman in the West End, who calls them several times a week saying we are blocking her driveway on this dead-end street? We are dropping off or picking up clients. What part is too hard for her to understand? And why do the police bother answering her calls?"

"We don't need a stadium in Hagerstown. We already have a good one sitting beside a wasted paper recycling plant. How much money is that going to cost the citizens of Hagerstown? Not the County Commissioners, they are not paying for this. We are, the people who live here and pay the bills."

"I'd like to put a message in the paper for the agnostic who's hollering about the church thing. Would you please respond and tell him that when he reaches the pearly gates of Heaven, he's going to need a church bulletin to get in and to make sure he has one."

"It took a major mistake on the zoning and permits department's part for Mr. Prodonovich to finally admit he's not perfect."

"I'm looking for some home interior votive cups with a snowman on them. If anybody has any to sell, please give me a call at 301-790-0824."

"I just wanted to make a statement about how much Clear Spring really needs a library. I'm a fifth-grader in Clear Spring Elementary and we really need books a lot. We are always studying on Indian history and stuff and it would really be nice to have a library in Clear Spring. A bunch of kids in my school and a bunch of teachers and other people in Clear Spring would like to have a library here."

"Things have gotten totally out of hand. My cat now wants to be called a Feline-American and wants his own Olympics."

"Dargan is happy being a country. We don't want to be messed up like the other Federation of States. We prefer our independence. "

"I can't understand why some of these people who go to church to worship the Lord and read the Ten Commandments, come home and stick their nose up at their neighbors. I'd say they were hypocrites, wouldn't you?"

"This is just a reminder for the people in the Havenwood Hill area of Smithsburg. It is illegal, against the law, to let your cats and dogs roam free. This summer I don't want to find cats and dogs running through my yard and digging in my flower bed. It is against the law."

"Good evening, Mail Call. This goes out to all Mail Call readers. If anybody out there knows of any lift chairs for the elderly, knows someone who might have one for sale or where in the county you can buy new ones - what type of store - could you respond back in Mail Call?"

"This is to all the college basketball fans. Can anybody please tell me what happened to the Georgetown University program? They lost to Princeton. They are a disgrace to Division 1 college basketball. Can anyone please tell me why this is?"

"Why in the world would people call in and protest about not putting trout in Greenbrier Park when the water is at such a level to not do it? I think the people who decide this know better than the ones that I doubt have been up there to even know what the level of the water is."

"I'm calling in about these basketball games that are on television. They take all the soaps off of Channels 2 and 13. Why don't they take the rest of them off that are on the other channels? It's not fair. I think something should be done about it."
