Teens stranded in C&O Canal cave

SHARPSBURG - Several teenagers were stranded in a cave on the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal near Snyders Landing Road Wednesday evening, according to Alicia Keefauver, a medic with the Sharpsburg Ambulance Co.

Keefauver said the youngsters had the day off from school and went hiking in the woods. She said they apparently traveled far along the canal and were too tired to walk back.

They took shelter in a cave for several hours, and then one of the teenagers walked back along the canal and called for help, she said.

She was not sure how many people were involved.

Three were taken to the Washington County Hospital were they were treated for hypothermia and released, according to hospital officials.

Additional information was unavailable.
