Plans for holding the Miss Maryland Beauty Pageant in Hagerstown this year were revealed last night when the Mayor and Council agreed to underwrite the Junior Chamber of Commerce project to the extent of $300. A tentative budget for staging the state pageant lists estimated expenses of $1,325.




Washington County farmers, in increasing numbers, have been rushing to put their corn under government loan in order to benefit from the government price floor. With corn prices down to $1.20 a bushel, 40 cents under the government floor, farmers with excess corn are protecting themselves by qualifying for government loans on their corn.




Hagerstown Airport is one of seven of Maryland's 34 airports to be awarded a Certificate of Good Airport Operating Practice in the National Aeronautical Association's 1948 airport safety campaign.

Londontown of Boonsboro, Mack Trucks and Potomac Edison have all contacted County Commuter bus system about special runs for employees in the wake of the gasoline shortage. Joseph Griffin, system manager will give Londontown a trial run in March, but he doesn't have enough buses for the other two. "Shoppers Special" bus runs connecting Hagerstown with Boonsboro, Keedysville and Sharpsburg also will begin in March.




Washington County legislators and the County Commissioners worked out details Thursday night of plans to create the powerful position of county administrator and county finance officer. They agreed that no other county jobs, such as county clerk or personnel director, will be abolished, although duties may be redefined.




A man walked into the credit bureau at 1608 Oak Hill Ave. Tuesday with his right hand in his pocket and demanded money. When the clerk told him they kept no cash on hand, the man turned and left. Apparently unconvinced, the would-be robber returned later, police reported, but found the doors had been locked by employees.
