MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg woman was charged with carrying a concealed weapon Saturday night after police found a loaded pistol during a traffic stop on Third Street in Martinsburg, police said.

Martinsburg City police charged Verneal Michelle Newell, 28, after police stopped her car for a vehicle equipment light violation. Police found a loaded .25 automatic pistol inside an armrest storage area between the car seats.

Newell was arraigned in Berkeley County Magistrate Court and released on $157 bond.




MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Police offered a Martinsburg man a ride home Wednesday then arrested him after they claimed to find eight pieces of suspected crack cocaine.

Martinsburg City police charged Quentin Lamont Coleman, 23, with possession with the intent to deliver an imitation controlled substance.

Police stopped a man holding his head and limping along the street and offered to take him home after he said he had been in a bicycle accident.

A pat-down search of the man before he got into the cruiser revealed eight individually packaged pieces of suspected crack in his coat, police said.

A field test on the substance revealed it was not cocaine.

Coleman was held in the Eastern Regional Jail on $1,067 bond.




Two people were injured when the driver of a car fell asleep and lost control on westbound Interstate 70 over the Conrail tracks Sunday morning, according to Maryland State Police.

Stephanie K. Harbaugh, 20, of W.Va. 4, Box 400-9, Hedgesville, W.Va., was charged with negligent driving.

Police said Harbaugh was driving a 1991 Ford Ranger pickup truck on Interstate 70 west of the Bower Avenue bridges when the 3 a.m. accident took place.

She apparently fell asleep and drove into the center median and hit the embankment between the two bridges, police said.

Her truck vaulted off the embankment and came to rest just west of the tracks below.

Harbaugh and her husband, Shawn Harbaugh, of the same address, were taken Washington County Hospital for treatment.

Stephanie Harbaugh was treated and released. Shawn Harbaugh was listed in serious condition Monday morning.




A report came in at 6:15 Monday that someone had broken into a Shifler Electric Company van at an employee's r8656 Downsville Pike home, Washington County Sheriff's deputies said.

The vehicle was ransacked. No information was available on whether anything was taken.




Two men and a woman were seen leaving the Custom Laundromat in Cascade around 6 p.m Sunday after coin changers there were rifled, according to Washington County Sheriff's deputies.

The three fled in a black Chevrolet Camaro.




A strong-arm robbery late Saturday netted thieves a leather coat, according to Hagerstown City Police.

The victim told police he was approached in the first block of West Baltimore Street by two men who took his coat by force.

The victim wasn't hurt, police said.




A television and VCR were stolen early Monday from 1531 Violet Drive, Hagerstown City Police said.




A resident of Walnut Towers was charged late Friday with a number of drug charges, Hagerstown City Police said.

Philip Glenn Moon II, 39, of 12 S. Walnut St., was charged with distribution of cocaine, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, conspiracy, possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia.
