Crumbs from the Cracker Barrel

March 09, 1999

Former Maryland House of Delegates member from Washington County, Charles Coss Jr., grew up at the Maryland State Penal Farm south of Hagerstown where his father was "in charge of the garden, poultry and cannery." Coss recalls that there was "no fear of the inmates. It was a whole different world. You could go anywhere, any time and mingle with the prisoners We had inmates that came over to the house on Christmas Eve just to be there and help decorate the tree."
