Mail Call

March 09, 1999

"Question: Is Hagerstown the only town in the country that is crime-free? Every time I pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV, I see everything going on around Frederick, Chambersburg, Cumberland and other places. But no crime ever in Hagerstown. I mean, how is that possible? I never see the police department doing much of anything. I'd like an answer to that. Thank you."

"Greenbriar Park, I can't believe it. You are not going to stock trout this season? People, call in and protest."

"Yes, this is to NDCB. I love you very much, baby. Yours, WLJ. Thank you."

"Yes, I'd like to say, in memory of my sister, Evelyn Stone, who passed away March 10, 1990, and whose birthday would have been March 11, I love and miss her very much. Sister Sarah."

"We lost a $115,000 on a building downtown. We are losing money every day on the ice skating rink. We are losing money every day on the golf course. Now we want to build a new stadium. How much money are we going to lose on that? Thank you."

"What can I say about Monica? I liberal woman of the '90s just trying to get ahead in life."

"I have quite a few colorful egg cartons and the regular ones. I though maybe someone would like to have them to use for Easter projects. Please let me know through Mail Call. Thank you."

"No, this is not racism, but it is an honorably discharged veteran. I resent the fact that we are making a hero out of a Buffalo Soldier, who deserted and ran away and kept hidden the fact that he deserted. Are we building monuments in honor of deserters now? God bless America."

"Yes, I'm calling about the lady who called about the Phantom vacuum cleaners. If she is interested she can go out to Sears, they have them out there. And, yes, they are good."

"Yes, I'd like to know when the police department is going to do something about the illegal parking on Mitchell Avenue in front of the tavern. It's not lined off there. There is a sign that clearly says no parking this side of the street. People coming out Mitchell Avenue going toward County Market have no room to get over when people are coming the other way. There is going to be an accident. The police department has been notified, but nothing is being done. It's time somebody did something."

"To the woman who wondered about the Phantom Thunder: The upright does everything that they say it will on TV. Don't put out the money for the floor model because the upright does everything that the floor model can do. I would suggest getting one, especially if you have allergies and pets. It does a wonderful job. Thank you."

"In the opinion page, Bob Maginnis states that the city of Hagerstown's tax base is flat. Has he checked with the state assessment office to truly find out how much increase the property in Hagerstown has gone up? This year I got a tremendous increase in my property assessment in Hagerstown and my neighbors also got increases. So, why does he call it a flat tax base? It's an ongoing increased tax base and he should get his facts right. Thank you."

"Hi. This is for the newcomers that just came into Dargan. We don't want our town to look like it did back then, so if you don't like it, please pack up and go back to where you came from and make yours look like it did before."

"This is to the person who wanted to know about the Phantom vacuum cleaners. I have one, the Phantom Lightning Stair Hugger. I've had it for about three weeks now and I actually enjoy vacuuming. My children enjoy their vacuuming their own bedroom also. It is an extremely good vacuum. You will be amazed at how much dirt it picks up."

"Hey, Pittsburgh Steeler, I don't know if you can read, but we know who you are. We have your license plate number, so I wouldn't come back to the store."

"If anyone in the Hagerstown area would have a St. Maria Goretti High School yearbook for 1973, 1974, 1975 or 1976, that they would like to give away or possibly sell, I would be very interested in obtaining these. They can contact me at P.O. Box 404, Hagerstown, Md. 21741. Thank you. I have tried to get one through the school and there are no longer any available. It would mean a lot to me to get one from these years."

"What a memorable 36 hours - the second historic house on the Fox-Deceived tract - the 18th century log house on Mount Aetna Road is torn down by three upstanding citizens without a building permit. The county issues a demolition permit for the Kammerer House the same day that the Historical District Commission approves its nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, and the Hagerstown Roundhouse meets the wrecking ball. Pave Paradise, put up a parking lot."

"Yes, I would like to know why the people that deliver the evening papers on the Wolfsville Road have to throw them in the snow instead of putting them in the mail box. Thank you."
