Commissioners sign deal with SHA about bridge

March 09, 1999

The Washington County Commissioners on Tuesday signed an agreement with the State Highway Administration for construction of a bridge west of the Halfway Boulevard and Interstate 81 interchange.

As part of work at the interchange the county wants a bridge over the CSX train tracks widened from two to four lanes.

Under the agreement the state will design the widening and replacement of the county-owned bridge and do the construction work. The county will pay the state for the work but later up to 80 percent of those expenses will be reimbursed with federal funds.

The county engineering estimate for the project is $2.3 million. The total cost to the county for the bridge work will be about $750,000, said Public Works Director Gary Rohrer.
