Mail Call

March 01, 1999

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call weekdays at 301-791-6236.

Readers are welcome to leave their recorded message on any topic they choose, but some calls are screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I was wondering why The Maryland Theatre doesn't try to get some really good children's shows? Sing-a-longs for children, so we don't have to take them out of town to Baltimore or Washington to see these children's shows. And another thing, whatever happened to the group, 'Up With People?' I see that Chambersburg gets them sometimes. I've been to two shows down at The Maryland Theatre and loved it, and it was packed. But for some reason, we don't even bother getting them anymore. What seems to be the problem? I wonder if someone could look into it and try to get some of these shows."

"I'm Richard from Westview Singles Life. Your response to 'Are you sick and tired' has been gratifying. Don't forget, two dozen of us will be on retreat in North Carolina this weekend. Friday, March 5, we will meet for our first Friday potluck. Call me at 1-304-274-6557 if you or any single person is interested in the fastest growing singles group in the four state area - yeah, four states - even Winchester, Va."

"This is for all you whiners out there, whining about board of education employees and bus drivers getting a nice fair raise. I invite you any time you want to try it, to trade places. Come drive a bus, come try to teach a class. Then we'll see what your thoughts are on getting a fair raise. People better wake up and take back this country."

"I would like to comment on the atrocious officiating at the girls' basketball game down at Boonsboro the other evening. I know that the officials have a job to do, but they need to let the players play and take the whistle out of their mouths a little bit. The Middletown team was shooting two shots, free throws, with a minute and a half left to go in the first quarter. It was outrageous, it was terrible. They need to let the players play."

"Will the hunter who found the Confederate graveyard near Little Orleans, Md., call 301-797-9116. I can put you in touch with someone who can take care of the graveyard."

"Yes, in the Daily Mail of Feb. 25, I found two articles I want to give a huge thumbs up to. The first is a letter to the editor titled, 'Churches Must Set an Example' by Pastor John Miller. The second is a syndicated columnist's, Kathleen Parker, article titled, 'Hillary's Next Project: Ditch Bill.' I would encourage everyone to look up these items and read them closely."

"It is now Thursday evening, Feb. 25 and I just read my Herald-Mail newspaper. This is the day after the Juanita Broderick interview was aired on TV. Not one mention by our liberal partisan newspaper about this instance. If you are going to print the news, print all of it, not only what you want people to hear."

"Washington County residents need to wake up and help our local lawmakers get us exempted from emission testing. You're being scammed. I say this because, of the three cars I own, the oldest gets called every two years, and the others are never called. So, this proves that they're targeting the older cars. And what's funny is, all the emissions equipment was removed and those inspectors have never raised the hood or looked underneath to see if it's still there - and it passes every time. What a joke."

"Wouldn't this be a wonderful world to live in if we would only tell others the good things people do, and tell only Jesus, the bad."

"I agree wholeheartedly with whoever called in about our Native Americans never being recognized. I am not a racist and pride myself in this. But, our true Americans should be recognized. Why aren't they? After all, we took everything from them and therefore owe them, not only recognition, but also better living conditions than they are having on these reservations, which are deplorable. I know, because I have visited some of them."

"I was wondering when The Daily Mail was going to get the sports page straight. Bowling is not a sport. It should be put on the local or lifestyle page."

"Good morning. I have a 1987 Buick. It was less than one-year-old when I bought it and had a light ding in the motor. As it got older, it sounds like there's somebody in there with a sledge hammer. Everybody I've taken it to tells me it's the nature of this type of car and cannot be fixed. It is a four-cylinder. Please can somebody help me with this problem?"

"I belong to Sons of Confederate Veterans. I was reading the article in the Feb. 25 Mail Call about that Confederate cemetery. Give me a call at 301-797-1483, please."

"I'm calling about the Davey Allison memorabilia, the Texaco promotional poster. I'm very interested. My number is 301-582-4502."

"I'm reading the Friday afternoon, Feb. 26, Mail Call, which I read every day. I'm reading an article from a man or woman who wrote a letter they wanted to mail, but didn't know what kind of stamps they had. Give me a break. Don't you read the papers? It said that the new stamps were not going to have the price on them. If you had them in front of you, and there was no price on them, they were 33-cent stamps. If they had a price on them, then they were 32-cent stamps."
