Va. man dies in I-81 accident

February 27, 1999

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A 21-year-old Winchester, Va., man was killed early Friday morning when the pickup truck he was riding in collided with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 81, according to West Virginia State Police.

Police believe Douglas Allen Hartley II died instantly in the wreck, which occurred about 1:55 a.m. at the Exit 12 entrance ramp near the Martinsburg Mall.

Investigators also believe alcohol was a factor in the collision, said Sgt. Jim Humphrey.

Benjamin Travis Brown, 21, of Winchester, was entering the interstate when his pickup began sliding into the southbound lane, said Humphrey.

Brown's truck was struck by a 1994 International tractor being driven by Brad A. Henise, 29, of York, Pa., Humphrey said.

Henise attempted to avoid Brown's truck, but struck it in the passenger side, Humphrey said.

Both vehicles came to rest on the west side of the entrance ramp.

Brown and Henise were taken to City Hospital near Martinsburg. Brown was in stable condition at the hospital Friday afternoon and Henise was treated and released, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
