Children's Learning Center awarded $66,000 contract

The Children's Learning Center at Hagerstown Community College has been awarded a one-year contract of $66,000 from the Department of Human Resources, Child Care Administration, to support the operation of its early childhood development program.

The contract will pay the salary for a part-time child care assistant who will accompany the children as they travel between the HCC program and other programs.

Reading council to sponsor seminar

The Washington County Reading Council will sponsor a reading seminar called "Becoming a Family of Readers," on Thursday, March 11, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Western Heights Middle School.


Child care will be provided by reading council members. Organizers ask that parents and other interested adults register for the free seminar by March 3.

The seminar will focus on how adults in the home can provide reading support for children of all ages.

Small group sessions will be offered for the following grade levels:

* Toddler through pre-kindergarten.

* Grades 1 and 2.

* Grades 3, 4 and 5.

* Grades 6, 7 and 8.

* Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12.

HCC to hold Flower and Garden Show

The Hagerstown Community College Alumni Association's fifth annual Flower and Garden Show will be held March 13-14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in HCC's Athletic, Recreation and Community Center.

The show features a children's activity and planting corner, a garden cafe by Round the Square and a Floral Art Show, along with Garden Club displays. There will be free seminars and demonstrations.

General admission is $3. Children under 12 get in free.

Spring conference slated for March 6

The Parent Information and Training Center of Washington County, in partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education, is hosting its spring conference Saturday, March 6, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Williamsport High School.

Keynote speaker is Judith Stern, a national speaker and educational consultant and the co-author of books and pamphlets on attention deficit disorder.

Seating is limited, and pre-registration is appreciated, organizers say.

Community Free Clinic to hold Pediatric Night

The Community Free Clinic will hold Pediatric Night on Friday, March 19, from 4:30 p.m. until all patients are seen.

Bruce E. Weneck, M.D., a board-certified pediatrician, will operate Pediatric Night.

Energy Assistance Program has available funds

Washington County Community Action Council Inc.'s Energy Assistance Program has funds available to help eligible Washhington County residents pay their heating bills.

Participants must meet federal guidelines for energy assistance programs. Applications will be accepted until March 31.
