Mail Call

February 25, 1999

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call weekdays at 301-791-6236.

Readers are welcome to leave their recorded message on any topic they choose, but some calls are screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I want to wish my baby, Drew, a happy birthday. Happy birthday, baby. I love you."

To the people of Washington County who are against the ball stadium. Write: 321 Lowe House Office Building, Annapolis, Md. 21701-1991 and say 'no' to the stadium and ask for a special election on the issue. Or e-mail: and say the same thing. All those in Washington County, say no."

"Please help me in my thinking. Last year teachers and board employees received a very small raise in pay. It's my understanding that a large portion of this was taken away for the retirement fund. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but then we read that county employees need an 8 percent increase. Didn't they have one last year and also a healthy bonus? Then we have on the table, a proposed increase for County Commissioners, by the way, amounting to what would be a 45 percent increase if agreed upon. I'm not a teacher and I do not work for the Board of Education. However, why do I have this vision of intelligent, educated teachers and board employees wearing orange vests and directing traffic in order to keep up in this county? What is wrong with this picture?"

"I agree with other callers who have stated that the building of the veterans' memorial wall in Marty Snook Park should have had the funding in place well before the construction began. The outrage here is the County Commissioners allowed this to happen. This was the 'build it, and the money will come' philosophy."

"I'm wondering, when are we going to quit messing around with Mike Tyson and stick him in jail and keep him there where he belongs. He is nothing but a piece of trash, as is true of quite a few of the sports figures. There are some good ones, but then there's the other ones that think they are above the law - and usually they are. They get a slap on the wrist for something that you or I would get a jail sentence for. They do nothing for society except disrupt it."

"If everybody would like peace in the world, all they would have to do is get rid of newspapers, radios and TV. Then there would be peace everywhere."

"I understand the Maryland state lawmakers are knuckling under to the Washington, D.C. beltway bullies and will vote to make the vehicle emissions inspection program permanent. I, for one, plan to sell my property and leave Maryland, the comrade state."

"Just thinking about Mike Tyson jumping out of the car and roughing up those two motorists down around the city. I'd like to see him try that in Dargan. He'll be hunting a new face."

"In response to the person who responded to Judge Spence's sentence, $50 or 5 years, duh. What would you take? Is it any wonder why drugs are getting so out of control here? If they would impose the harshest sentence available, maybe they wouldn't have so many repeats. I mean, $50 or 5 years? Come on."

"No, I don't work for the county, but I think an 8 percent pay raise would be great for those people. Someone called Mail Call and said enough is enough. Well, that someone's probably making $40, $50, $60 thousand a year. Human beings are the most jealous bunch of things you've ever seen. As long as it doesn't pertain to them, it's not good for anybody. But, if they can get it, they're going to take it."

"I'd like to leave a message letting Harold know that his son and I love him very much and we wish him a happy birthday. We look forward to spending many years and many more happy birthdays with him. We love you."

"I'd just like to congratulate the E. Russell Hicks Middle School Band and Mr. Rob Hovermale for an outstanding year. They've got the largest marching band in the county. The kids did an excellent job and they all love and respect Mr. Hovermale completely. I must say as a mother who has a son who was chosen for the all-county band, I was very disappointed in the coverage it received in the paper. When people are in sports, you see practically the whole team listed and what went on. I think you could have taken a bottom section of a page and listed all the kids who were fortunate enough to make the all-county band."

"Why don't they make a big deal out of drinking instead of always smoking. Drinking kills more people than the smoking does."

"Good evening, Mail Call. If you would look at the coverage that The Herald-Mail is giving Chris Shank, one would think he's the head of the delegation instead of Bob McKee."
