Air cannon to be used against birds

February 24, 1999

Beginning about 5:30 p.m. today people may hear a series of loud bangs coming from Hagerstown City Park.

City workers will be using an air cannon to try to scare away the thousands of crows and black birds roosting in the park, City Public Works Manager Doug Stull said Tuesday.

The air cannon, which is owned by Washington County, will be set off several times between 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. today, Thursday, Friday and perhaps Saturday, Stull said.

The birds are damaging the trees and their droppings are creating a mess, Stull said.

Workers have tried to move the birds by playing tapes of birds in distress, but that has not worked.

Stull said they hope to move the birds to an area near the old roundhouse or to woods off Wesel Boulevard.
