Leachate contract renewed

February 23, 1999

The Washington County Commissioners voted Tuesday to renew a contract with a company to haul leachate from the county landfills to the Conococheague Waste Water Treatment Plant.

Caro Cris, a division of Negley Enterprises of Hagerstown, will be paid to load, haul, deliver and unload leachate at the plant.

The leachate, a low-grade waste, will be taken from the Resh Sanitary Landfill, the Rubble Landfill and the Old City/County landfill.

The county will pay the company $9.80 for every 1,000 gallons of leachate hauled from the Resh Landfill, $8.90 per 1,000 gallons taken from the Rubble Landfill and $9.80 per 1,000 hauled from the Old City landfill.

The county expects to pay $29,400 for hauling from Resh and $8,900 from Rubble. There are no estimates in the bid for Old City but the Solid Waste Department's budget for fiscal 2000 calls for $31,000 for hauling.

In fiscal 1998, the county paid the company $22,215 for hauling leachate from Resh, $25,057 from Rubble and $34,584 from Old City.

The current contract expires in May. It included an option for renewal. The cost per gallon for the prior contract was $14.10 per gallon.
