Hagerstown women defeat Garrett

The Hagerstown Community College women's basketball team's game against Garrett could have been looked at as a tuneup for the Maryland JuCo tournament, which begins this weekend.

In reality, it was like a 50,000 mile checkup for the Hawks as the surprising play of the Lakers kept the game fairly close before Hagerstown (21-5, 15-2) used its athleticism and rebounding domination to come away with a 77-64 win at the HCC Athletic Center last night.

HCC had defeated Garrett very early this season and had not seen the Lakers since that time. Garrett played surprisingly well leading most of the first half until the Hawks responded.

"We weren't really surprised by how they played us," HCC coach Marlys Palmer said. "What surprised us was how well we responded to the challenge."

And the response was quick and fatal one for the Lakers who came into the game fresh off an upset win at Allegany. But this game could not be termed pretty by any stretch as Garrett took advantage of several HCC errors to stay close.

And although they could draw no closer than 15 in the second half, the Lakers kept Hagerstown's big people honest, scrapping for every rebound.

Tia Ferguson led HCC with 15 rebounds, a career high, while Quitta Scott scored 15 points to pace the Hawks.
