Commissioners award construction contract

February 03, 1999

The Washington County Commissioners on Tuesday awarded a $669,000 bid for construction of a winter equipment storage building at Hagerstown Regional Airport.

The low bid was from Myers Building Systems Inc., of Clear Spring. The engineer's estimate was for $700,000.

The vote was 3-0 with Commissioner Bert L. Iseminger absent due to illness and Commissioner John L. Schnebly abstaining. Schnebly said his company does business with Myers.

Buildings slated for register of historic places

Two local buildings, Cedar Grove and St. Mark's Episcopal Church, have been recommended for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

During a Tuesday meeting, the Washington County Commissioners concurred with the nominations suggested by the Washington County Historic District Commission.

Cedar Grove is near the Potomac River and Dellinger Road. St. Mark's is at Lappans Road and Sharpsburg Pike.

Cedar Grove was nominated because its expansion from a small log dwelling built before 1767 to a larger building shows the changes in building traditions and techniques in Washington County over the years, said Stephen T. Goodrich, county chief senior planner.

St. Mark's was nominated because it is an intact display of ecclesiastical and rural Gothic architecture, he said. It was built in 1849, he said.

Funds sought to refurbish cars

Washington County Sheriff Charles M. Mades asked the Washington County Commissioners to use $176,000 from the next fiscal year budget to replace and refurbish 13 cars.

The commissioners agreed on a 4-0 vote, with Commissioner Bert L. Iseminger absent due to illness.

The county can get the new cars at a lower price by piggy-backing onto state purchases if it acts by March 15, Mades said. The county in recent years has given him money out of the next fiscal year's budget for this purpose, he said.

Mades plans to buy seven 1999 Ford Crown Victoria cars, one 1999 Chevrolet Blazer and refurbish five cars.

Two of the Ford cars will replace cars used in Boonsboro and Williamsport and the costs for those would be paid by the towns, he said.

When eight new patrol deputies start in July they will have to share cars, he said.

Airport Commission takes new name

The Washington County Airport Commission has changed its name to reflect the new name of the Hagerstown Regional Airport.

The name change to the Hagerstown Regional Airport Advisory Commission was formalized by a resolution passed by the Washington County Commissioners at Tuesday's meeting.

The commissioners changed the name of the airport on Oct. 6, 1998.
