MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A 19-year-old Shepherd College student was killed Sunday night in a single-car accident on Interstate 81, police said.

Jamie Lynne Douglass, 19, of Hagerstown was riding in the front seat of a 1993 Mazda MX-3 when the driver lost control at 8:30 p.m. near the Spring Mills Road exit on northbound I-81, police said.

West Virginia State Police Trooper R.C. Copson said the car left the west side of the road and flipped several times before coming to rest on its wheels in the median.

Douglass, who was wearing a shoulder seatbelt but not a lap belt, was thrown from the car. She was later pronounced dead at Martinsburg City Hospital, said police.

Police said the driver, Sara Poisal, 18, of Martinsburg, was cited for failure to maintain control of her vehicle.

She was looking in the rear view mirror and talking to a passenger in the back seat when she realized she was heading off the road, Copson alleged.

Poisal and a 17-year-old Martinsburg girl who was riding in the back seat were treated at Martinsburg City Hospital for minor injuries and released.

Douglass was a graduate of Hedgesville High School in Hedgesville, W.Va., where she was a member of the band, an honor roll student, a cheerleader and was active in sports, according to her obituary.

The family had no comment, according to a representative of Minnich Funeral Home on East Wilson Boulevard in Hagerstown.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown.
