Pa. death investigated

January 19, 1999

STATE LINE, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police said an autopsy would be performed today on the body of a truck driver found dead Monday morning at an Antrim Township trucking company.

Carol Rae Bittinger, 54, a long-haul truck driver from Meyersdale, Pa., was discovered dead at about 8 a.m. in a bunk room at Hoffman Transport Inc. on Mason-Dixon Road, according to Franklin County Chief Deputy Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner.

Conner said the Somerset County woman's death was reported by another truck driver staying in the room. He said Hoffman Transport provided the bunk room for its drivers.

Trooper Mark Grove said there appeared to be nothing suspicious about the death. The report said she had arrived at the facility at about 10 p.m. Sunday.

"We treat every death as suspicious until we prove otherwise," Conner said.

The autopsy will be performed at Lehigh Valley Medical Center in Allentown, Pa.

Conner said Bittinger was licensed as a truck driver in 1997.
