Shootings in the Jonathan Street area

Following is a list of recent shootings in the Jonathan Street area within the past 26 months.

The neighborhood, designated a HotSpots area in 1997, is home to about 5 percent of Washington County residents but accounts for about 23 percent of its violent crime.


- Jan. 12: A gunman fired several shots at a car near the 400 block of Park Place at 3:55 p.m. No one was hit by the bullets but an unoccupied car parked nearby was damaged.

Police charged Durrell M. Blackmond, 27, of 115 W. Church St., with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault and reckless endangerment.


Jan. 13: Four of eight shots fired at a New Jersey man hit him as he stood in front of 202 Jonathan St. at around 7 p.m.


Kurrian Tyshon Grasty, 18, was struck in the stomach and groin, police said.

- April 8: A man standing at the corner of Jonathan Street and Murph Avenue pulled a gun from his waistband and fired into a moving car at 10:35 p.m.

Tyler Lamont Moore, 24, of Church Street, Waynesboro, Pa., told police he ducked after hearing gunshots but discovered he had been hit in the arm. He was treated and released from Washington County Hospital.

- May 6: Kevin Leon Major, 19, of Lancaster, Pa., was found at about 2:04 p.m. lying in a grassy parking area off Rubbie Avenue, an alley between the 400 block of North Jonathan Street and Park Place. He was hospitalized with a gunshot wound in the back.

- Dec. 4: An man was shot near 229 N. Jonathan St. when several shots rang out at 10:30 p.m. The wounded man was found lying just inside a doorway to the building.


Feb. 25: Several shots were fired at Antonio Leon Mooney shortly before noon as he walked along the 400 block of Park Place. Police in Martinsburg, W.Va., later arrested a Hagerstown man in the shooting.

Mooney was uninjured in the shooting but was not so lucky on Dec. 20, 1996, when he was hit twice by shots fired from a small-caliber weapon as he stood in the rear parking lot at 920 W. Washington St.

Darrell Andre Shanton, 24, of 417 Park Place was charged with first-degree assault, conspiracy to commit first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and carrying a concealed weapon with intent to injure in that shooting, police said.

Also charged in the shooting was William Floyd "Billy'' Campbell Jr., 23, of 37 W. North St., who was arrested in Baltimore County, Md.

- Dec. 19: Andre Lashawn Morgan of Garden Lane was shot in the buttocks and leg after a dispute with another man in the 300 block of Jonathan Street.

Hagerstown City Police charged Curtis Thomas, 23, with one count each of attempted second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and wearing or carrying a handgun.
