Suspect asks for help with drug problem

January 11, 1999

A man charged last week with taking a woman's wallet at the Clear Spring Amoco Station passed up an opportunity for a preliminary hearing, telling a judge he wants help with a drug problem.

Steven L. Mellott, 33, of 203-A S. Artizan St., Williamsport, was charged with robbery, felony theft and second-degree assault in the Jan. 5 incident.

Washington County District Judge Ralph France last Thursday set bond for Mellott at $90,000.

He was still being held in the Washington County Detention Center Monday night.

"I need help," Mellott said at his videotaped bond review last week from the Washington County Detention center. "I have a drug problem."

The charges stemmed from an incident in which a man took a wallet from the open purse of a woman who was trying to help him, according to Maryland State Police.

Assistant Washington County State's Attorney Arthur Rozes said Mellott's prior offenses include a 10-year sentence for assault with intent to maim in 1989.

"This is extremely serious," Rozes said.

Mellott countered that he had always showed up for any previous court date.
